Cane (rattan) used in chairs is almost exclusively grown in Southeast asia. It is a hot climate, quick-growing vine-like plant that is harvested and processed by inexpensive labor. Even if we could grow it here in the US, very few people would be willing to brave the hot, wet conditions, and low pay necessary to make a viable product.
Cane refers to the peeled bark of the Rattan Vine. Rattan is the sturdy, tropical vine that can be processed to make Cane, what are commonly referred to as reed products, and the large rattan stalks used for the frames of furniture. Wicker refers to both the type of weaving done for wicker furniture, and as an older name for anything woven, like baskets or seats.
This bring me to how tariffs work. Cane and Rattan are mostly processed and shipped from China. We have to pay my suppliers to cover the tariffs that they pay for each shipping container at the docks. I raised the average cost of doing a chair by $10 which just barely covers the new pricing by suppliers. Unfortunately shipping and the general costs associated with doing business are also increasing quickly.
Thanks for reading, and I hope everyone is patient while tariffs continue to be a factor.
