Cane (rattan) used in chairs is almost exclusively grown in Southeast asia. Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia rely heavily on the Rattan industry for both local use, and export. There are many varieties, but all are hot climate, quick-growing vine-like plants that are harvested and processed by inexpensive labor. Even if we could grow it here in the US, very few people would be willing to brave the hot, wet conditions, and low pay necessary to make a viable product.
Cane refers to peeled strips of the Rattan Vine. Rattan is the sturdy, tropical plant that can be processed to make cane, what are commonly referred to as reed products, and the large center stalks used for the frames of furniture. Wicker refers to both the type of weaving done for wicker furniture, and as an older name for anything woven, like baskets or seats.
This bring me to how tariffs work. Cane and Rattan are mostly processed and shipped from China. We have to pay suppliers to cover the tariffs that they pay at the boat docks. I raised the average cost of doing a chair by $15 which just barely covers the new pricing by suppliers. Unfortunately shipping and the general costs associated with doing business are also rising quickly.
Thanks for reading, and I hope everyone is patient while tariffs continue to be a factor.
